Introduction to La’akea Community Slideshow

La’akea Intentional community is a small family of friends doing organic permaculture on our 24 acres of rainforest on the Big Island of Hawaii. We value emotional intelligence, communication skills, low impact living, and openness to alternative lifestyles. Take a tour with our members Tracy and Amara! This was part of an Virtual Tour of Intentional Communities hosted through the Foundation for Intentional Community, June 2021

An experimental method of treating the infestation of the Queensland Longhorn Beetle, which bores inside trees, lays eggs and the grubs eat the inner bark, eventually killing the tree. Currently there is no recommended way to treat them, so we tried using a fungus that is used to kill the coffee borer. It was successful at killing almost all of the grubs after one month of repeated applications, and a 95% reduction after two months. Michael Holwell outlines and demonstrates his process. The beetle infests citrus, avocado, Norfolk pine, kukui, cacao and many more. It is currently only found on the east side of the Big Island.
